CompBio Asia 2025

2 weeks of cross-disciplinary training in Computational Biology
for graduate students

June 15-28, 2025

Kasetsart University, Chatuchak, Bangkok, Thailand

Advanced Studies Workshop in
Computational Biology

Biology research increasingly benefits from computational analysis of large and complex data sets, particularly the development of techniques for discovering and describing patterns in those data with simulation and AI models. With the goal of fostering these skills in the next generation of trainees, we introduce the CompBio Asia—Advanced Studies Workshops (ASW).

This two-week workshop consists of integrated lectures, hands-on training, and small-group projects. It was developed by researchers at the University of Montana and the University of Arizona and hosted by Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop features lecturers from across the globe with expertise in disciplines spanning artificial intelligence, genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and molecular dynamics.

Kasetsart University: A Green Oasis in Bangkok

Kasetsart University (KU) is one of Thailand’s most prestigious public universities, renowned for contributing to agriculture, science, and technology. Established in 1943, KU’s Bang Khen Campus in northern Bangkok is a hidden gem for international tourists seeking a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Beautiful Architecture

The campus features a mix of traditional Thai-style buildings and modern educational facilities. Explore KU’s museums, including the Kasetsart University Museum, which showcases Thailand’s agricultural heritage, and the Pridi Banomyong Library, an impressive academic hub.

Wildlife & Nature

The university is home to various bird species, making it a popular spot for bird watchers. Small lakes and gardens are also ideal for relaxation.

About us

CompBio Asia

CompBio Asia is primarily funded by the National Science Foundation of the USA (NSF). NSF initially funded the initiative to host two advanced study workshops (ASW) in 2022 and 2023 (Award #1953405). NSF recently funded the initiative to host three more ASWs in 2025, 2026, and 2027 (Award #2420222). The Agency for Science, Technology, and Research of Singapore (ASTAR), the National Supercomputing Center of Singapore (NSCC), is the major local partner in Asia in organizing the workshops.

In collaboration with ASTAR, the National University of Singapore (NUS), the National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand (NSTDA), and the University Putra Malaysia (UPM), the ASWs were held in Thailand in 2022 and Singapore in 2023. Furthermore, the Trans-Eurasia Information Network Corporation Center (TEINCC) supported the ASW in Thailand in 2022 and two subsequent satellite workshops in Indonesia in 2022 and Bangladesh in 2023. NSCC supported the ASWs in Singapore in 2023.

The workshop is supported by NSF award 1953405 and 2420222.

Common Questions

The workshop is designed for graduate students from the USA. For applications from the USA, we will only consider graduate students. For applications from the rest of the world, along with graduate students, we will consider applications from academicians, researchers, and industry professionals.

Participants are expected to have graduate-level research experience in at least one of the
streams- genomics, computational structural biology, molecular dynamics, or artificial
intelligence- and an active interest in learning the other streams.

Workshop attendance also requires comfort with the UNIX command-line interface and
proficiency in at least one programming language (see below).

Attendees should be proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C,
Rust, R). We strongly recommend arriving with sufficient experience in Python to allow the
installation of Python packages, parsing data from structured and unstructured data files, data
manipulation with Python’s pandas library, and figure generation with Matplotlib.

Please keep an eye on this website for links to suggested tutorials.

NSF will cover all costs for successful applications by US citizens, nationals, and permanent residents. Applicants from the rest of the world are expected to cover their own costs. We will have a few travel grants for applicants from the rest of the world.
